A day in Ahmedabad

Kutch trip was going to be one of the best rides of my life. I came to Ahmedabad from Mumbai on my Triumph Tiger. Since I had a long trip ahead, I did not spend much time in Ahmedabad as much as I should have. However, there are a lot of things to do in India’s first-ever UNESCO world heritage city – Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

I spent the evening riding Honda Goldwing down the colourful streets to explore the places to see in Ahmedabad. It is a perfect city to spend 2-3 days with your family or friends.

Gujarat is known to celebrate festivals like Makar Sankranti and Navratri with some extra enthusiasm. What we don’t hear much about are the things to do here. Gujarat tourism is more than the festivals and Rann Utsav in Rann of Kutch.

Top 6 places to see in Ahmedabad

There’s no shortage of places to see in Ahmedabad. If I stayed a few more days I would have loved to explore more. The heritage of Ahmedabad introduces us to the various aspects of Hindu, Islamic, and Jains.

Jama Masjid

One of the oldest mosques of Ahmedabad, Jama Masjid. The hustle-and-bustle of the shops opening, vendors displaying their wares, street carts lining up on the roads and a sea of people making their way through all the cacophony was all there. The old architecture in Ahmedabad is all about delicate carvings and religion.

Siddi Sayyed ki Jali

The smallest mosque of Ahmedabad, Siddi Sayyed ki Jali is an architectural masterpiece. The lace-like carvings on a stone found here can hardly be found anywhere else. Siddi Sayyed ki Jali and Jama Masjid are situated next to each other.

Adalaj Stepwell

Adalaj ni Wav or Adalaj Stepwell is a five-floored stepwell built in the 1400s. Built on the outskirts of Ahmedabad becomes cooler as you descend lower into the stepwell.

Sarkhej Roza

Sarkhej Roza is yet another historic and beautiful place to visit in Ahmedabad. After a long day of exploring Ahmedabad, the gardens of Sarkhej Roza are a perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon. Watch the sun go down as the sound of the azaan fills the air. The mosque at Sarkhej Roza is still in use.

Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram is a walk-in Mahatma Gandhi encyclopedia. The very famous Dandi march that we all studied in school started at Sabarmati Ashram. If you want to witness how Gandhiji lived his life, this spot near Sabarmati river is where you should be.

The information is spread across the property with life-like examples and charkha from the time. The charkha was not just a tool to yarn khaki, it is our weapon. You will find everything right from art galleries to handwritten letters from leaders to Gandhiji. He used to stay at Hriday Kunj.       

Kankaria lake

Kankaria lake, a train and the activities around the lake itself are enough to spend a couple of hours.

Best time to visit Ahmedabad

The best time to visit Ahmedabad or anywhere in Gujarat is the winters. Summers are too hot and rains not so pleasant. Mornings here are beautiful with sounds of birds and a spectacular sunrise.

You can start your day early in the morning, with a long list of things to do. Afternoons are less crowded. The best time to roam around would be late afternoon, just before the sunsets. Afternoons would mean lesser crowds and the pre-sunset time can give you the chance to take pictures in the golden hour.

Travelling in Ahmedabad

While coming on your own vehicle is the best option, you can also opt to use the local modes of transports. Public transport connects all the important places in Ahmedabad. Right from buses, rickshaws to cabs, you can find anything easily.
