Gokarna to Kerala Road Trip | South India Coastal Route on Triumph Tiger

Beating the lockdown blues on my Triumph Tiger, this is my experience of riding across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu (Kerala Road Trip).

This is my quest to explore the beautiful coastal route of India, to break free from my comfort zone that was forced down on me during the lockdown. Read this blog to find out the reasons why Kerala captured my heart. You can read my journey from Mumbai to Goa and Goa to Gokarna to know exactly how my adventure was so far.

From riding for hours to chilling in Goa to trekking in Gokarna, I was now ready for Kerala road trip. I was staying in Kanhangad in Kerala. Kerala, bordered by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep Sea is one of the most beautiful and educated states of India. It is blessed with everything right from backwaters and beaches to hill stations, and Ayurveda, religion, to education.

I left in the afternoon from Gokarna for Kerala Road Trip. On the way, I had planned a quick detour to Murudeshwar Temple. What caught my attention was, while I was sitting at the temple, I could hear the Azaan (call for Namaaz). That is the true beauty of India.

From Murudeshwar Temple, I was excited to reach Kerala. I met my friends in Kanhangad, who were my travel buddies for the next two days. By the time we reached our resort, I was exhausted from the very long day and ride.

Things to do in Kerala Road Trip

Out of a million things to do in God’s own country, I couldn’t do much as I was on a tight schedule and a lot to do before I head back to Mumbai. I was ready to face Kerala’s scenic and breathtaking views. However, what I wasn’t ready for was, how unpredictable the weather in Kerala can be.

Uncountable Suspension Bridges of Kerala

The next morning, we planned to visit a tonne of places but all of those plans were washed away by terrible rains. After struggling the whole day, we managed to spend an evening at the Padnekkad Hanging Bridge.

Kasaragod to Alappuzha

Alleppey has always been on my travel bucket list. Unfortunately, all the excitement was killed by bad roads. I should’ve taken the highway or longer route. This route was terrible and I couldn’t wait for the ride to end.

I started my journey towards Alleppey in the morning at 9:30. The roads were absolutely terrible. Google Maps showed 11 hours to cover 384 KMS.

Alleppey is a very famous destination in Kerala. Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a small charming town in Kerala. People from all over the world come to visit this paradise.

Alleppey is gifted with houseboats on the backwaters. These backwaters have a spectacular view of the coconut trees, green fields, and village life along the shores of the river. The houseboats are fully-equipped like a hotel room. They have in-built toilets, air conditioners, a kitchen, and a deck-like-balcony.

Next best thing to do in Kerala is the Alappuzha beach. It has this stunning 137-year-old pier extending into the sea and a lighthouse built during the Portuguese era.

Varkala Beach

Had I not been on this mission to explore the roads, I would’ve spent more days in Kerala. Another spot I will definitely visit is Varkala Beach in Kerala.

Varkala beach is claimed to have medicinal properties. The mineral water springs near Varkala Beach is not only fun but also therapeutic. I had never heard anything like this before. 50 km from Trivandrum International Airport, Varkala is most visited in winter.

Kochi

Kochi is also known as Cochin. It is a major port in India overlooking the Arabian Sea. It is also called the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea‘. It is the biggest city in Kerala and has a rich history of colonial India. Kochi is the financial, commercial, and industrial capital of Kerala.

Cheraman Juma Mosque

Cheraman Juma Mosque - Kerala Road Trip

The Cheraman Juma Mosque is a mosque in Thrissur District. Stories claim it to be the oldest mosque in India and one of the first mosques in Asia. It was built in 629 AD, which makes it the oldest mosque in the Indian subcontinent which is still in use.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t enter the mosque because it was under renovation. But I did get a small glimpse

Best time to visit Kerala

My trip to Kerala was in October. Even though monsoons end in October, I got a lot of rains on my ride in Kerala. Monsoons are beautiful and almost perfect to enjoy the beaches and backwaters. Even this comes with its drawbacks as sometimes the rains are so heavy that you might not be able to go out at all.

Summers in Kerala is hot and humid. Though the evenings will be cooler, you will not be able to enjoy the day. However, the hill stations are a great escape for winters like Wayanad and Munnar.

From November onwards the weather is pleasant until February. You can enjoy the most and all over Kerala in winters.

There are a million more things to do in Kerala, a thousand more places to visit and explore. I left a lot for my next trip to Kerala? Till then, put these all in your itinerary and have the best time of your life in God’s Own Country!

Live Your Life. Live Your Dream.
